DESCRIPTION:In middle age\, Melvin Goldman (z”l) recorded a series of cassette tapes telling his life story\, leaving them to be found decades later after his passing. His daughter\, Lee Goldman Kikel\, discovered the recordings—a priceless family heirloom conveying memory and the history of a Polish Jewish family which became the basis of a 2019 Holocaust memoir. Lee’s presentation focuses on her father’s recounting: his pre-war childhood\, ability to survive the Lodz ghetto\, Auschwitz and other concentration camps\, and a miraculous recovery while knowing most of his family perished.\n\nLee tells how hope\, tenacity\, and perseverance amid major losses guided her father to become a United States citizen and start a new life in Pittsburgh. Learn more here. \nSpeaker Bio: \nLee Goldman Kikel grew up in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh\, where she spent many of her early years in her family’s jewelry business\, both as a child and an employee. \nLee’s father\, Melvin Goldman\, did not talk much about his childhood in Poland\, or his family. In the 1970s\, he began recording details of his experiences on cassette tapes\, which lay dormant until 2015\, when Lee found them and finally listened to his testimony. Lee honored his wishes to transcribe his story as a book\, published in 2019 as Perseverance: One Holocaust Survivor’s Journey From Poland to America. In April 2023\, Pittsburgh’s Prime Stage Theatre debuted a theatrical adaptation of her book\, entitled Perseverance\, written by playwright L. E. McCullough and generously supported by a National Endowment for the Arts grant. \nOver the years\, she has told her family’s story to many audiences\, and she has also become a generations speaker as part of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh. She has discussed the Holocaust and anti-semitism with diverse audiences around the region and beyond. These engagements have fostered multidisciplinary ways to reach audiences of all ages and in a variety of subject areas\, and have taught her both the importance of sharing Holocaust education and the value of presenting the content in engaging ways. \nGoldman Kikel is a lifelong Pittsburgh resident\, having earned both a BS in psychology and a master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. She also worked in the mental health field as a rehabilitation counselor.

In 2021 she was chosen as their Volunteer of the Year. Her desire to understand the history and psychology of the Holocaust led her to become a social studies teacher\, a career she loved for a decade. Currently\, she is in her 21st year as a Professor of Education at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. She is a member of advisory boards for the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh\, Seton Hill’s National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education\, and the Westmoreland YWCA Racial Justice Committee. \nPresentation Synopsis: When we learn about the Holocaust\, we need to learn individual stories that inspire us: Inspire us to stand up for what is right\,  inspire us to speak out against evil even when we feel scared\, and inspire us to hope even in the darkest times. We need to recognize the power each of us has. The stories that I will share about my mother\, my grandmother\, and their extended family showcase the power individuals have in the choices we make. My mother and grandmother survived because of luck\, quick wits\, and the willingness of strangers to put what was right ahead of their own safety. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Clare Drobot for her first public talk with the Holocaust Center!  \nClare knew her paternal grandparent’s\, Wanda and Jan Drobot\, affectionately Yay and Nana\, as Polish immigrants living near her childhood home in Northern Virginia. But when Wanda passed away in 1998\, Clare began an unexpected journey exploring their shared and individual histories. Both Wanda\, née Salomea Wander and Jan\, originally Jakub Djament\, were Holocaust survivors who raised their children as Catholic in Post-WWII Poland. This is the story of Clare’s search to uncover her family’s past and understand the legacy of her Grandparent’s survival. \nAbout Clare: \nA dramaturg\, playwright\, and producer Clare Drobot is currently the Co-Artistic Director at City Theatre in Pittsburgh working alongside fellow Co-ADs Marc Masterson and Monteze Freeland. She has worked in various capacities at Premiere Stages at Kean University\, Laura Stanczyk Casting\, Williamstown Theatre Festival\, The McCarter Theatre\, The BE Company\, Play Penn\, and New Dramatists. Her work as a writer has been seen in Ars Nova’s ANT FEST and the New Hazlett Theatre’s CSA Series among others. She serves on the boards of the National New Play Network and Brew House Association and is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh (LP XXXVIII). As Director of Programs and Education of HCPgh\, Ms. Loeb will answer questions about the organization\, the type of work they do\, and how the tragedies of the Holocaust are still felt in communities today. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nBio: A granddaughter of Holocaust survivors\, Emily was born and raised in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where her grandmother used to share her story of survival with school groups and community members. Emily moved to Pittsburgh in 2011 and became involved with the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh in 2018\, when she started volunteering as a Generations Speaker. SUMMARY:Holocaust Speaker Series: Dan Ottenheimer
DESCRIPTION:“Dan Otteinheimer tells the story of his father\, Fritz Ottenheimer. Fritz was born in 1925 in Konstanz\, Germany — a large town with a population of around 40\,000. When Hitler came to power in 1933\, Fritz and his family were forced to endure increasing anti-Jewish propaganda\, discrimination and persecution. In November of 1938\, Fritz witnessed his father’s arrest\, on what is now known as Kristallnacht\, or the “night of broken glass” when around 30\,000 innocent Jewish men were taken to concentration camps. \nAfter his father’s release from the Dachau concentration camp\, Fritz\, now 14 years old\, and his family immigrated to the U.S. \nAfter graduating from high school in New York in 1944\, Fritz volunteered to become part of the U.S. Army. He was deployed to Germany in 1945\, and served in units that aided in the “de-Nazification” process of his home country. When the war ended\, Fritz returned to the U.S.\, got a degree in Industrial Engineering\, and eventually settled in Pittsburgh\, PA. \nDan\, Fritz’s son\, was born in Pittsburgh in 1957. As a child\, thanks to the influence of his father\, Dan loved the outdoors — most notably hiking\, camping\, biking and caving (one of his father’s hobbies as well). \nDan moved to Boston in the 1970’s to attend college. He remained there and worked at several software companies until he retired in 2016. In 2019\, two years after his father passed away\, Dan began to speak in the Boston area about his father’s experiences in Germany. In 2021\, Dan joined the Generations Speakers Bureau at the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh\, speaking virtually to schools and organizations in the Pittsburgh area. \nIn his talks\, Dan tells his father’s stories about growing up as a Jewish child in Nazi Germany\, and about his father’s return to Germany as a soldier in the U.S. Army. \nThe Holocaust Speaker Series is held each Wednesday at 11 a.m. on Zoom. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Lee Fischbach and Oscar Singer
DESCRIPTION:Oscar Singer was born in Radomysl Wielki\, Poland in 1925. As a teen and young adult\, Oscar survived imprisonment and forced labor in the Mielec\, Wieliczka\, Krakau-Plaszow\, Theresienstadt\, and Auschwitz camps. Following the end of the war\, he was held in a displaced persons camp. After receiving his visa to come to the United States in 1951\, he eventually settled in Denver\, Colorado. He married\, had three children\, and had a successful career in the restaurant and catering business for many years. While living in Denver\, he spoke to many students and other groups\, sharing his story of survival.
