SUMMARY:Generations Talk by Susan Straus
DESCRIPTION:My Mom’s Story: Child Survivor of the Holocaust \nSusan Straus (she/her) is the daughter of Jewish holocaust survivors. In this presentation\, she tells the story of her mother\, Judy Levy Straus\, who was born in Germany the day after Hitler came to power in 1933. Susan describes Judy and her family’s experiences after moving to Amsterdam\, being deported to Westerbork\, a transit camp in 1943\, and later to Theresienstadt\, a concentration camp that the Nazis used as a propaganda tool to attempt to convince the world that they were treating the Jews well. Judy and her mother survived the war; Judy’s father\, who was ultimately deported to Auschwitz\, did not. Susan’s presentation includes video testimony\, allowing the audience to hear Judy describe her experiences.

SUMMARY:Kristallnacht: The 1938 Reich's Pogroms
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Holocaust Scholar and Historian Dr. Michael Berenbaum. Register here. \n\n\n\n\nKristallnacht\, or the “Night of Broken Glass\,” was a pogrom that occurred November 9-10\, 1938. It was the first organized\, government-sanctioned act of violence against the Jews in Germany. It marks the start of the systematic violence against Jews during the Holocaust. Each year\, the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh holds an event to commemorate this important turning point in history. These programs are generously supported by Edgar Snyder. \nDr. Michael Berenbaum is a writer\, lecturer\, and teacher consulting in the conceptual development of museums and the development of historical films. He is director of the Sigi Ziering Institute: Exploring the Ethical and Religious Implications of the Holocaust at the American Jewish University (formerly the University of Judaism) where he is also a Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies. \nThe Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh is a program of The Tree of Life Center for Humanity.

SUMMARY:Suppression and Expression: A Concert Exploring Art\, Mental Health\, and Intergenerational Trauma
DESCRIPTION:The REgenerate Music Project performs music of composers labeled “degenerate artists” and suppressed by the Nazis in 20th Century Germany. The string quartet\, comprising musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, seeks to keep those composers’ music alive and to honor their lives. \nIn this concert\, the quartet will perform pieces that resonate with the artwork of Norman Klenicki\, a self-taught artist and son of Holocaust survivors\, who uses his visual art to express and address the symptoms of his bipolar disorder triggered by the legacy of injuries his mother incurred at the hands of Nazi death camp guards. \nIn 2019\, the University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics & Health Law created a virtual exhibition of his artwork: Experience\, Integration\, Expression: The Work of Norman Klenicki. In November 2026\, an in-person exhibit of Klenicki’s work will be open in the gallery space of the HSLS Library of Scaife Hall on the University of Pittsburgh campus (3501 Terrace Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15260\, enter at Terrace and Lothrop Streets\, Mezzanine Level). \nThis concert celebrates the opening of that exhibit and the role of music and visual art in expressing and addressing the mental health challenges of inter-generational trauma. \nRegister here. \nThe concert and parking are free. Contact for additional information: PittResearchEthics@pitt.edu \nPrimary Sponsors: Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh & University of Pittsburgh Bioethics and Health Humanities Fund
