Jakob’s Torah

Our 2021 Kristallnacht commemoration centered around a special piece in the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh’s collection, known as Jakob’s Torah. This Torah, which was rescued from the flames of Kristallnacht in Germany, travelled the world: accompanying its rescuer, Jakob Weinblum, as he and his family spent 8 years as refugees in Shanghai; then spending 30 years in New York City in home storage, considered too damaged to be used as a ritual scroll; and then, finally, finding a permanent home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where its extraordinary story could be shared with the world.
This virtual exhibit, “Jakob’s Torah: An International Journey,” accompanies the live commemoration by telling the story of Jakob’s Torah.
Waldman International

The Waldman International Arts and Writing Competition, established in 1985, allows students in grades 6-12 to compete for financial scholarship prizes.
Categories vary from year to year, and have encompassed formats such as creative writing. essay, visual arts, and performing/film arts. Each year, a specific theme in Holocaust learning is set, encouraging students to incorporate research and firsthand accounts into their creative endeavors.
We are delighted to celebrate the winners of the 36th installation in this competition with this exhibit and retrospective interview.
“Waldman International: A Look Back with 2021 Virtual Winner’s Exhibit” celebrates the winners of the 36th installation in this competition.
